Welcome to the second edition of the C3 San Diego Newsletter. This letter contains information about the New VISTA operating System as well as additional important information regarding your computers or network.

As most have heard, earlier this year Microsoft launched its new operating system Windows Vista. The underlying code has been rewritten to boast tighter security and increased productivity over previous Window Operating Systems. Windows Vista will be released in the United Stated in many versions including; Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, and Vista Ultimate. Each version will offer different features with Vista Home Basic offering the fewest and Vista Ultimate offering all. For additional information and a complete comparison of the Operating System features please visit Paul Thurrot’s Super Site for Windows. An important note for businesses which utilize a Windows Server: You must purchase either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate for the new computer to fully integrate with the existing server. Upgrading to Windows Vista In order to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista one must first make sure a computer is Vista Ready. Microsoft has provided the free “Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor” which will verify that a computer is Vista Ready. In most cases, the computer will need to be less than a year old, and contain a sticker that states it is “Vista Ready” with a minimum of 1GB of Ram. The advisor tool will recommend the version of Vista to purchase along with any recommended hardware upgrades. C3 San Diego will recommend that most clients wait to purchase Vista in combination with a new PC, as this will insure the hardware is sufficient to run the Operating System and Programs. However, if a current machine meets the specs of the Upgrade Advisor, or you wish to upgrade your current hardware, C3 San Diego can purchase discounted versions of the new OS through our resale partner. Most Manufacturers today only offer Vista as the operating system option. However, as of April 20, 2007 Dell has announced that will once again offer Windows XP Home and Pro as an operating system option for purchase with a new PC. This abrupt 180 comes after many consumers and business complained that the “Vista Only” option required them to upgrade applications to those released in 2006 or 2007. |

C3SD would like to remind our clientele to take some time over the next week to check your backup device. Unfortunately one of the most common pieces of hardware to fail on a computer is the Hard Drive. If this device fails mechanically it can cost hundreds of dollars to dismantle and rebuild in order to recover data. The simplest way to recover from a hard drive failure is to have a current data backup. However, data is only as current as the last backup performed. Please make sure your device is connected properly and has a current copy of data. C3 recommends performing a backup of important documents at least once a week even if just to a USB Flash Drive. |
|
Laptop users should pay special attention to backing up data before leaving on a trip, as traveling with a laptop is the number one cause of Laptop Hard Drive Failure.
