Welcome to the March Edition of the C3SD Inc. Newsletter. This letter contains important information about the recent Microsoft Service Pack releases and the Vista Capable Logo Class Action Complaint.

Microsoft Releases a Variety of Updates

Over the next few weeks Microsoft will be releasing the following updates to their Operating Systems and Applications. Each will offer a variety of security enhancements and benefits and should be downloaded as soon as possible. To download the updates simply open Internet Explorer and Click “Windows Update” from the Tools Menu. If you have any questions please feel free to Contact Us.

Vista Service Pack 1 – This release will provide a few feature changes to the year old Operating System. Cosmetically users will not notice a big change after applying the update, but in fact over 100 changes have been made to the core source code with this release. Key features include, faster network copy times, access to greater amounts of RAM, and up to 50% faster sleep/resume times. It will also allow users to select the Google Desktop Application as the default Desktop Search Provider.

Due to an incompatibility with a particular Intel Chipset and Driver your computer will download the Service Pack once it has verified that it does not contain the affected Intel Drivers. If your computer was shipped with the Intel Drivers installed, it will first download the updated Driver Package and then download the Service Pack 24 hours later. Please allow about 20 min for the Service Pack installation. Your computer may have to reboot when complete.

XP Service Pack 3 – This final update for Windows XP will not contain major changes to the Operating System. It will combine the 100+ updates Microsoft has released over the past 3 years rolled up into one installer. The update will be a required installation for computers which plan to access certain features of the new Windows 2008 Server Platform which launched last week. For additional information on this release please visit the SuperSite for Windows.

Office 2007 Service Pack 1 – This update will deliver important stability and performance improvements to the flagship product. Other features include an updated Dictionary and tighter integration with Office SharePoint Server. Addition information and download links can be found here.

Windows Live – This free update from Microsoft make available some of the Vista features to Windows XP users. The main reason to upgrade to Windows Live is the upgrade it provides for Outlook Express. The new Windows Live Mail client will provide integrated Calendaring as well as a built in Junk E-mail Filter. Other features include updates to Live Messenger, Photo Gallery and a Family Safety Plug-in to help control and protect children while online. For more information and download links please visit the Windows Live Site.

Windows Vista Capable Debacle

Microsoft and Intel made other headlines this past week regarding the “Windows Vista Capable” stickers which were placed on some hardware models in mid 2006. Generally this hardware contained Intel’s 915 Chip Set and was shipped with the Windows XP Operating System. The branding program was designed to assure customers that their XP Machine could be upgraded to Vista when it launched in January 2007.

The issue has made headlines because Microsoft lowered the original requirements for a Vista installation to meet Intel’s hardware specs. Over time, consumers, some of them Microsoft Executives, found that the Intel Hardware was insufficient to properly run Vista. A class action complaint, which will more than likely become a lawsuit, has been filed on behalf of all purchasers. For more information on this story please visit cnet.com

C3SD would make the recommendation that you check to make sure your hardware will support a Vista install before you make the upgrade purchase. If you have questions please Contact Us.

Discontinue of Microsoft Products

With the launch of Windows Server 2008 this past week Microsoft is slated to retire its 5 year old product Windows Server 2003. Over the next few weeks, OEM manufacturers such as Dell and HP will begin to stop offering Server 2003 on its hardware offerings. The Windows 2003 Small Business Server is set to be retired this summer when it is replaced by the Windows 2008 Small Business Essentials Server.

We bring this to your attention as the hardware requirements for 2008 will be changing, most notably it will only run on a 64-bit system. This may in some cases increase the cost of a server by $200-$500. In the next C3SD Newsletter we will outline in depth the changes made in Server 2008. If you are on the fence about installing a Server for your Small Business, now is the time to do it.

Finally, Microsoft has also stated that it will stop production of Windows XP this summer. Microsoft was forced by the OEM Manufactures to continue to produce XP over this past year until Vista SP 1 was released. Microsoft feels the XP offering has stalled the deployment of Vista and is ready for users to move forward to the new OS.

Welcome to the second edition of the C3 San Diego Newsletter. This letter contains information about the New VISTA operating System as well as additional important information regarding your computers or network.

Windows VISTA is here!

As most have heard, earlier this year Microsoft launched its new operating system Windows Vista. The underlying code has been rewritten to boast tighter security and increased productivity over previous Window Operating Systems. Windows Vista will be released in the United Stated in many versions including; Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, and Vista Ultimate. Each version will offer different features with Vista Home Basic offering the fewest and Vista Ultimate offering all.

For additional information and a complete comparison of the Operating System features please visit Paul Thurrot’s Super Site for Windows. An important note for businesses which utilize a Windows Server: You must purchase either Vista Business or Vista Ultimate for the new computer to fully integrate with the existing server.

Upgrading to Windows Vista

In order to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista one must first make sure a computer is Vista Ready. Microsoft has provided the free “Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor” which will verify that a computer is Vista Ready.

In most cases, the computer will need to be less than a year old, and contain a sticker that states it is “Vista Ready” with a minimum of 1GB of Ram. The advisor tool will recommend the version of Vista to purchase along with any recommended hardware upgrades. C3 San Diego will recommend that most clients wait to purchase Vista in combination with a new PC, as this will insure the hardware is sufficient to run the Operating System and Programs. However, if a current machine meets the specs of the Upgrade Advisor, or you wish to upgrade your current hardware, C3 San Diego can purchase discounted versions of the new OS through our resale partner.

Most Manufacturers today only offer Vista as the operating system option. However, as of April 20, 2007 Dell has announced that will once again offer Windows XP Home and Pro as an operating system option for purchase with a new PC. This abrupt 180 comes after many consumers and business complained that the “Vista Only” option required them to upgrade applications to those released in 2006 or 2007.

Maintain Your Backups

C3SD would like to remind our clientele to take some time over the next week to check your backup device. Unfortunately one of the most common pieces of hardware to fail on a computer is the Hard Drive. If this device fails mechanically it can cost hundreds of dollars to dismantle and rebuild in order to recover data.

The simplest way to recover from a hard drive failure is to have a current data backup. However, data is only as current as the last backup performed. Please make sure your device is connected properly and has a current copy of data. C3 recommends performing a backup of important documents at least once a week even if just to a USB Flash Drive.

Laptop users should pay special attention to backing up data before leaving on a trip, as traveling with a laptop is the number one cause of Laptop Hard Drive Failure.

Off-Site Backup

C3 San Diego is proud to offer it’s customers the ability of implementing an off-site backup solution. This service plan combines the scheduling of nightly Onsite backups to external USB drive and an Offsite backup via the internet for important files.
