Windows Small Business Server 2008 incorporates all aspects of the client/server environment that Small and Medium Sized Business (SMB’s) require, offering an affordable integrated solution that works with your existing technology.  

The Standard Edition offers your business the following technologies built upon the Microsoft Server 2008 Platform:

  • Microsoft Hyper-V (Virtualization Platform)
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Standard Edition
  • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
  • Windows Server Update Services 3.0
  • Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange (Spam & Antivirus protection)
  • Integration with Office Live Small Business

The Premium Edition also offers:

  • A 2nd copy of the Windows Server 2008 Operating System*
  • Microsoft SQL 2008 Standard for Small Business.

*This 2nd copy can be installed on separate hardware or as a Hyper-V Virtual Machine utilizing the SBS Hardware

What makes the Windows Small Business Server so attractive is that it offers three of Microsoft’s best technologies for a fraction of the cost of what larger business have to spend.   Typically Microsoft requires that you purchase the Server 2008 Operating System ($900) first and then a line-of-business application such as Exchange ($750+) or SQL ($2000+) in addition. Client Access Licensees (CALs) for each product must then be purchased for each user on your network that will utilize the products.   This can get Very Expensive, Very Quickly.  The SBS platform offers these features, plus Windows SharePoint and Update Services, for a fraction of the cost under one CAL for each user on your network.   The trade off is that the Small Business Server can only be used for Businesses with 75 or fewer employees.  If you business has more than 75 employees it qualifies for the Windows Essential Server Platform.
